All of us - not only scientists, industrialists and generals-should ask ourselves what can we do now to improve the chances of reaping the benefits of future AI and avoiding the risks. This is the most important conversation of our time, and Tegmark's thought-provoking book will help you join it (Prof. Stephen Hawking)This is a rich and visionary book and everyone should read it. (Oliver Moody Sunday Times)I was riveted by this book. The transformational consequences of AI may soon be upon usÂ-but will they be utopian or catastrophic? The jury is out, but this enlightening, lively and accessible book by a distinguished scientist helps us to assess the odds. (Prof. Martin Rees, Astronomer Royal, cosmology pioneer, author of Our Final Hour)This is a compelling guide to the challenges and choices in our quest for a great future of life, intelligence and consciousness - on Earth and beyond. (Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Motors)Being an eminent physicist and the leader of the Future of Life Institute has given Max Tegmark a unique vantage point from which to give the reader an inside scoop on the most important issue of our time, in a way that is approachable without being dumbed down. (Jaan Tallinn, co-founder of Skype)Max seeks to facilitate a much wider conversation about what kind of future we, as a species, would want to create. Though the topics he covers - AI, cosmology, values, even the nature of conscious experience - can be fairly challenging, he presents them in an unintimidating manner that invites the reader to form her own opinions. (Prof. Nick Bostrom, Founder of Oxford's Future of Humanity Institute, author of Superintelligence)The unprecedented power unleashed by artificial intelligence means the next decade could be humanity's best - or worst. Max has written the most insightful and just plain fun exploration of AI's implications that I've ever read. If you haven't been exposed to Max's joyful mind yet, you're in for a huge treat. (Prof. Erik Brynjolfsson, Director of the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy and co-author of "The Second Machine Ageâ€)Max's new book is a deeply thoughtful guide to the most important conversation of our time, about how to create a benevolent future civilization as we merge our biological thinking with an even greater intelligence of our own creation. (Ray Kurzweil, Inventor, Author and Futurist, author of The Singularity is Near and How to Create a Mind)This is an exhilarating book that will change the way we think about AI, intelligence, and the future of humanity.
Forget Big Data - that is taken care of by cloud, storage, speed, BlockChain and other technologies.Look further than Smart Data and discover the world of AI.Engage in discussing what could happen if AGI arrives in 5, 10 or 30 years and singularity occurs within days. Max Tegmark paints a compelling case for urgency!
The first few chapters are quite well written as an introduction. The later chapters are on the future of humanity and have less to do with artificial intelligence. The notion "super-intelligence" is used hundreds of times in this book, but the reader remains in the dark about what that really is.The chapters regarding possible future space exploration are so speculative at times that they are bordering on comedy.
Being new to the Conversation regarding AI this Book gives an excellent overview of where the World is currently at (2018). It was at some points a bit harder to understand without a background in physics and/or technology but it gave me a great overall understand. Very much worth the read. Thank you for the great work! :-)
I have this book in Audiobook format and on my Kindle. This is a book that you can read/listen to several times. It goes quite deep into the AI topic while being extremely easy and entertaining to read/listen to. I highly recommend this book not only to techies but to anyone interested in the Artificial Intelligence topic, how this research area is evolving and how a future with AI could look like.
This is an extremely interesting book. No matter, if you like AI or not, this is the book to read. It opens the eyes, how far AI already altered our life, and how much more it will. Strongly recommended.Due to the fact of complexity of AI, the book is not easy to digest - another proof how well it covers the topic
If your are interested in future societal and technological development because of the rapidly increasing impact of artificial intelligence, this book is indispensible, especially for young people who might be interested in occupations that will soon vanish.
The author does not take sides. He just provides a thorough coverage of the possible scenarios/outcomes of what life could be like if/when we manage to produce AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) and what we should do today to shape this future outcome.
